Where: Glaramara Hotel, Borrowdale, Cumbria
When: Monday 26th August to Friday 30th August, 2019

We're delighted to announce that the Glaramara Masterclass will once again be taking place in 2019, set in the breathtaking Borrowdale Valley at the heart of the English Lake District.

Two courses are on offer, each led by a world class tutor who will guide you through various techniques to help progress your work and take home skills that you can incorporate in future pieces. These courses are aimed at those who already have a base understanding of the course subject and are looking to develop their skills into new fields, helping develop their style. These are not courses for beginners. But don't be put off! If you're not sure if the course is right for you then drop us a line with any queries you may have.

 "Spinning Retreat" with Ruth Gough

Over 3 days of teaching Ruth will lead a group looking at various ways of mastering your spinning wheel,  an in-depth look at various new techniques and how to use the wide variety of equipment available on the market today to the best of it's ability.

There is no set syllabus that will be followed, but below are just a few of the subjects that will be covered. The emphasis is on working within the group and finding out in what direction participants would like to go  during the course.

"Spinning wheels de-mystified: Gears, ratios, treadles and drives"
"Fibre Preparation: Carding, combing and why"
"How fibre preparation will affect your finished yarn"
"Specific yarn styles for specific projects"

Weaving Handspun

There will be 10” wide rigid heddle looms ready warped up so that you can if you wish make use of your handspun yarns to weave a free form sample and if yarn spun and time allows to get a scarf length. No worry on how the loom is warped, no planning of design, just grab your spun fibres and get to it! If required the single post warping method can demonstrated for setting up a rigid heddle loom quickly.

Each person will have a loom to work on.
There will be no supplementary charges for materials. At the end of the course the looms used will be offered for sale..... Who knows, you may feel inspired to carry on!

As part of this course we'll have a wide variety of equipment available, including wool combs, drum carders, blending boards, hackles and e-spinners. These will be setup and available to use, with Ruth on hand to offer direction if needed.

"Exploring Nuno" with Vivienne Morpeth

*** The felting course is now full. We do have a cancellations list which you can be added to, please contact the office***

Immerse yourself in this workshop with glorious colour, beautiful rich textures and soft luscious forms. You will create and explore with wool, silks and plant fibres using a range of techniques and leave after 3 full days of felting with an armful of felted lengths, structures and super light art pieces.

This course is of interconnected areas of study to enable students to acquire and refine skills that can then combined at a later time to create finished nuno based clothing or decorative articles.

• Colour and Texture
Colours and textures inspire our lives and form part of our memories and so we will explore the relationship between colours, shades and textures, through wool, silk and plant fibres, manipulating and laying the fleece and materials to felt a beautiful length of Nuno fabric. Such lengths make stunning throws over a favourite chair, soft wall art or key panels in sewing interior design features or wearable garments.
• Shape and Form
Much fun can be found in shape and form with bags, vessels and hollow sculptural shapes which can be folded and twisted to become another. We will explore various felting structures, choosing and felting the ones which inspire you, incorporating textures and colours as needed.
• Design and Minimalism
Wearable designs, repeated patterns, minimal tones and super lightweight floating felt, using prefelt and barely there silks to explore and create fabric to wrap yourself in.
• Pattern
Drawing together these explorations, felting surface pattern and structures with resist and relief inspiring fabric ideas for life in the home or to wear.

The Location

We've been running our Masterclass at the Glaramara Centre for 10 years, with course participants coming from all over the world. The center has been updated over the years to ensure that it offers fantastic facilities and is the perfect base for our courses. The resident chef provides hearty meals that make the most of what the local produce has to offer and the on-site bar is always a welcome relief after a long day!

Full board accommodation is including in the price: All rooms are en-suite and breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided, together with tea, coffee and biscuits if you need a little pick-me-up during the day!

We know that sometimes husbands, wives and partners may not have the same degree of enthusiasm as the rest of us when it comes to fibre-crafts, but that's no reason not to bring them along! We also have the option of booking a place as a Non-Participant. Accommodation and meals are included in the price, but they won't be able to take part in the courses. The surrounding area has some of the best walking routes in the country, from ambles along the valley bottom right through to tackling the mountain ridge routes. Or if they'd prefer something a little more sedate then then there are plenty of picturesque towns and villages to visit. But be warned: They'll no doubt have to face a fair amount of "woolly" inspired chat in the bar each evening!
