English Traditional Style Wool Combs 4 pitch

We are very pleased to announce that we are now able to offer 4 pitch English Wool Combs in the style of the classic Peter Teal comb. The design is based on the traditional English wool combs. Peter reduced the original design in size and weight to make them easier to handle.

In the past the Peter Teal wool comb was seen as the "industry standard" for combs. Their design, styling and build quality created a product which was not only fit for purpose but which were also a pleasure to use. Unfortunately Peter eventually had to give up production and today they only appear for sale every now and again, soon being snapped up by the eagle eyed.

Now, they are back in production by Wingham Wool Work. Built entirely in-house at Wentworth we have drawn heavily from the original design, once again playing on the strengths that make this comb great. Made from European Beech and finished in a clear varnish, these combs are built to a high standard to ensure they do their job for many years to come. In response to customer requests we have now introduced the new Wingham Mini Combs, the little sibling of the standard combs.

Each one is built with care and attention to detail using the best quality materials. All the work is done by hand, no computer controlled machining, just old fashioned skill. We use selected quality European beech from sustainable sources. Other exotic hardwoods could be used but we prefer to source from areas that we know for definite operate conservation policies.

We have not compromised on the original design and materials and have put many hours into ensuring we get a quality finish for a tool that will last a lifetime. Each set is handcrafted from selected beech, given a hand lacquered finish which is carefully rubbed down between coats to ensure a truly durable finish. The steel tines are produced to our specification, hardened and tempered and then given a final clean in our own tumbler polisher.

We'd like to say a big Thank-You to Peter Teal for his assistance in getting this product together. Without the time he spent perfecting the design we'd be unable to offer this product today. After long deliberation we did make a slight alteration to the design by putting a small block behind the head of the combs to stop them sliding out of the storage position when the unit is picked up. This is the only change we were able to make to Peters original design. The original dimensions and weights have been replicated as they give the correct balance to the combs.

Specification
Peter Teal put many hours of research and development to come up with what has become a tried and tested design. Everything has a good reason for being part of the design. The comb head and tines are designed to the optimum length, spacing, angle and weight to give an efficient action on the swing of the comb. When clamped in the pad the static comb is correctly positioned to allow a good follow through on the swing action. The pad is mounted on the base at an angle to fix the comb in the correct position to the swinging comb.
Comb weight is 660gms. The whole unit is 3.4 kilos.

If you require a left handed set please request this at the time of ordering. The pad is fixed on the base for either right or left hand use. We will assume right handed if a request is not made.

Wingham Mini Combs

The Wingham Mini Combs are built to the same quality and specifications as the standard combs above.... they're just a bit smaller! Obviously this means they're slighty cheaper but there are also other benefits. The lower weight means the combs are much easier to handle, giving a slightly easier "flick", and of course they're easier to transport.

Combs with Base

These combs are individually hand crafted in beech with hardened tool steel tines. The handle and tines are designed for ease of use being set at an angle to give a good strike and pull action. Each tine is accurately ground to the optimum point for good wool penetration.

The set is a pair of combs with a base unit for holding one comb, a diz and also included is a straightener tool just in case a bit too much force is used. When packed together the whole unit is secure with the combs held in place in the base. They can be used free of the base as a pair of simple mini combs or one clamped in the base unit in the upright position. Base unit table clamps are not provided as they are easily obtainable from hardware stores.
The combs are approximately 9cm wide with tines 3mm diameter 10cm long. Individual comb weight 150gms. Total unit weight 600gms.

Hackles
We are now pleased to be able to offer blending hackles for the production of your own multicoloured or textured tops. There is lots of information on these techniques in the books by Deb Menz.

The Hackle set consists of;
Two parallel rows of 3mm hardened steel engineered tines set into a hardwood(beech) base for clamping to a work table. Lacquer finish to all woodwork.
Approx 30 cm in length to give a good working width.
Included is a tine straightner essential for the repair of any over enthusiastic blending
Three hole diz for drawing off your blend into a top
Safety bar is provided for covering the tine points when working with the hackle, this should always be in place when you have finished placing fibre on the tines. Do not leave the tines unprotected.
Table clamps are not included.
Total unit weight 2 kilos.
