This fine set and the medium  set were developed for use by Shrewsbury Flax Mill support group.

The hackles have been used for demos, for public "have a go" sessions and in schools and  a college, with no squashed or damaged fingers. They are easy to clamp to a table with G clamps, and not too big to transport.

With Shrewsbury Flaxmill successfully getting a huge funding bid, we hope, after renovation, to be celebrating flax and linen, and demonstrating the process.  Wingham Wool hackles will be taking pride of place!  Come along in 3 years and see for yourself!

After becoming involved in the Shrewsbury Flaxmill restoration project, it became essential to learn to break, scutch and hackle.  At first this was done with a dog comb and a nit comb for very fine line, but it became obvious that if I wanted larger quantities, I would need hackles.  A pattern was taken from Riitta Sinnkonnen Davies's hackles, and sent to Wingham Wool , who made two hackles - one with large tines, and a finer one.  This revolutionised our lives!  Taking handfuls of broken and scutched flax, and passing them through the large then the finer tines produced a really good strick, ready to dress the distaff.  As we were asking the general public to have a go, it was essential that there was no rough wood for splinters, and they were fairly safe, if supervised.
