Needlepunch / Pre-Felt

All our needlefelt/pre-felts are 100% wool

We do not stock any synthetic/acrylic needlefelts as they are not able to be wet felt finished or combined with wool. They do not fit in with the techniques of hand feltmaking.

Needle punch felt is a commercial product  which has been utilised by hand feltmakers to speed up production . The felt is made by initially carding the fibre into a web. This web is then layered up to a required thickness and passed through a needle bed. Thousands of needles are set in a plate which goes up and down pushing the barbed needles through the fibre. This has the effect of entangling the fibres. At this stage the felt is handleable but not strong. Commercially it then goes for finishing to harden it through the use of pressure and steam.

Prior to the commercial finishing of the felt it can still be worked with by hand feltmakers. Decoration can be added, cutting and shaping can be undertaken and then it can be wet finished in the normal manner.

Essentially it is a time saving product and great for clothing projects. The three weights which we have in stock cover the needs of most feltmakers. If heavier weights other than those listed are required it is easily layered up and felted.
The  merino wool used is compatible with our full range of dyed colours. The Scandinavian wools are of a coarser stronger nature excellent for hard wearing projects.

All the needle felts are produced for us to our specification for the use of hand feltmakers. We carefully select the fibre quality and manufacturing process to ensure their suitability. We use 23 micron wool for the pre-felt needle punch as this is harder wearing, less likely to pill and has less shrinkage than the finer felts. This is important as very often this material is used for clothing where a slightly harder wearing finish is needed. Finer wools like our 21 micron dyed range are not always suitable for a clothing quality felt and in this case can give inferior surface results..

Shade cards of this range are available at a cost of £7.00 sale or return. We take credit card details and send the card out to you for 2 weeks, if the shade card is then not returned we then take payment. Any card details we have held are then shredded, we do not hold details on any computers.

We always aim to pieces in single lengths, however if you absolutley need this then please add a noth in the message box or give us a ring.
