These are the needles which are used in commercial felt making needlebed machines.

It is possible to use them as individual needles for the production of hand made 3 dimensional felts and for accurate placement of decoration on flat felt. They work on the principal of a series of barbs on the needle pushing individual fibres down into the mass of fibres and causing entanglement. 

All needles are made from special steels to resist breaking. In their industrial use they only ever enter the fibre in a straight punching action with very little sideways forces. When using them by hand care should be taken to avoid any sideways bending, this is when breakages occur.

The needles are manufactured in numerous types for differing fibres and end uses.  From all the types we have selected those which are of most use to the hand feltmaker. We will be adding more types to the list as the need arises so if you have any requests please contact us.

19 Gauge triangle; for very heavy duty work on coarse fibres, vegetable fibres and very strong hair types.

  36 Gauge crown; requested by doll makers for inserting hair into heads, we do not have any experience of this activity  so cannot offer advice, but the dollmakers say it works!

38 Gauge crown; requested by doll makers for inserting hair into heads, will produce a slightly smaller hole than the 36 crown but is not as strong. This does not mean they are weak. All are made from special hardened steel

FELTMAKERS BULB SPRAY

USE FOR SPRAYING WORK IN PROGRESS.

A great device for the controlled spraying of water or soap solution onto your work. 

Spray head 3cm diameter  Bulb holds 200ml of liquid. 

To use, place head in jug of liquid, squeeze the bulb and allow it to fill. Gentle squeezing of the bulb then creates a shower of liquid onto the work piece.

Beech wood roller with ridges for the rolling of felt.  Use to assist the levelling of the felt when using the rolling method. This is an alternative to rolling in a mat or bubblewrap

Rolling surface 25cm long overall length with handles 45cm weight approx 500gms.

Self fitting of holders.

Warning, needles break easily when bent. Wear eye protection when fitting holder.

To fit holders drill a hole in a piece of wood slightly larger than the needle diameter. Support the wood in a vice, leave space for the needle to come through. Slide the holder onto the needle place the needle in the hole.  Wrap a cloth around the needle leaving the head showing. Gently tap with a hammer to drive the needle into the holder. Take care to align the needle with the slot in the holder. Click on thumbnail below for big picture.
