Felting Needles
These needles allow the pre-felting process to take place without the need for soap and water. In recent years they have been used by hand felt makers as an additional technique in felt making.
All needles are manufactured to the Gauge standard, as we list them, not to any colour code or other type of description. This is the most accurate way to identify them. As an industrial product for use in machines that run at over 800 strokes per minute they are very tough and durable. There are many options of type and usage in the commercial field, it is therefore, easy to get carried away with technicalities. We have selected a simple range for use by hand taking into account function and price.
A note on breaking needles. They are designed to enter the work perpendicular to the surface. Whilst they will tolerate a small amount of
bending, too much and they will break. A straight in and out action will ensure a long life for the needle. A well used needle will wear out the barbs before it breaks.
They can be used singly or in groups in small hand felt making tools. In a group in a tool they can be used to place decorations precisely on pieces of pre-felt. The decoration is placed on the felt and stabbed into place with the barbed needles. It will stay in position when the normal wet finishing process is carried out. Three dimensional work can also be carried out. In this case it is usual to work with a single needle to sculpt shapes.
Quality warning. There are now needles of Far Eastern origin appearing for sale which are of inferior quality and cheaper. All our needles are of European manufacture and of the highest industrial quality.
Safety; These needles like all sharp tools need treating with care. They are not suitable for use by children without close supervision. All our needles are packed in robust slide lock boxes. Please keep them in these boxes.

Feltmakers Needles
19 Gauge triangular
Heavy duty for very coarse fibre. Use with heavy fibres such as jute, flax, horse, cow. Not usually used with wool.
All our needles are packed in safe slide lock storage boxes to prevent accidental injury. We would not recommend that any needles are used by children unsupervised.
Advice can be given on needle choice and
use as we all have experience of needle felting.

Doll makers
Crown needles are mainly used for the inserting of fibres into vinyl dolls heads. The barbs are at the very end of the needle only. They can be used on wools but are not very efficient for this.
