The cottage is around 200 years old and is a listed building due to its association with the start of the Industrial Revolution. The nearby Newcomen Beam Engine has been described by English Heritage as the single most important Industrial monument in the world. The cottage started off in life as part of a group of industrial buildings. Probably part of the tar distillery. Evidence of the industrial use can be found in the original back wall of the building where there is a basket arch in the wall.
Now the middle of a terrace of 3 cottages. Around 1814 it was a tar distillery for a short period of time. The buildings were then converted into small two room cottages about 150 years ago. In the more recent past in 1986 they were renovated and two cottages were combined into one, hence the two numbers for our address and the two doors in the photo above. Many of the interesting old features have been retained whilst being modernised to a high standard. In spring of 2008 an extension was added to give a third bedroom, and downstairs shower wet room with toilet, and utility room.

Location
By car
The cottage keys are to be collected from Wingham Wool Work in Wentworth
Finding the cottage is relatively easy as there are many of the brown Tourist direction signs for Elsecar Heritage Centre which guide you in. On reaching the centre ignore the signs for the public entrance and look for the service entrance sign. The cottage is not in the centre, just that we are on the same road as the service entrance. On the map below follow the directions to the brown Elsecar.
Chivas Cottage, 5 Distillery Side is found by following the Heritage Centre Service Entrance sign. This takes you onto Distillery Side. Cross the Railway line. Go straight ahead for about 75 metres. On the left is the Newcomen Engine house, opposite on the right there is a row of cottages at a right angle to the road, the middle one is Chivas Cottage. Parking is just past the row of cottages in front of the second garage, number 5 on the door, 2 parking places in front of the garage door. The cottage entrance is through the arched gateway adjacent to the parking area. Number 5 on the gate.
Wingham Wool Work are at the point were the yellow roads meet at Wentworth.
Elsecar Railway Station is on the Sheffield Barnsley line about 10 mins walk from the Cottage.
