About Us
Wingham Wool Work began trading in the late 1970's we started off as a small business with Ruth producing handspun yarns and knitwear. Interest developed from customers who wanted to learn to spin and purchase fibres and equipment. From this initial stage we started to stock a small range of fibres and wheels. This led to us taking our first business premises in the village of Wentworth and opening our retail outlet and mail order service. Over the next 10 years this expanded as sales increased.
In 1987 we moved to our present premises, still in the village of Wentworth. At the same time we were able to install our own machinery for processing the fibres we now sell. This developement allowed us full control of our products. We were able to produce what was needed by handspinners and feltmakers instead having having to use what is available on the commercial market for mass production. Further expansion took place in 2007 when we took warehouse premises at Elsecar Heritage Centre. This enabled us to increase our purchasing so that we are able to take delivery of and store bales of fibres. The ability to import and store bulk bales has helped to give stability to stocks and prices. This warehouse space also allowed us to increase our machinery as we installed more carding and blending machines as well as beginning production of card cloth for hand carders.
Development of our special blends has continued, often in response to customer requests, we will try anything. When we have a new blend we can trial it by spinning or felting with it and then offer direct advice to customers. Because we have a craft background we are sympathetic to the needs of textile workers.
Over the years we have continued to grow from a workforce of one to a team of seven plus part time helpers when needed. As computer based communication and sales have developed we have moved with the times to our present state of having a fairly good web site. It has always been our intention not to loose the personal contact with our customers and to maintain this we have our retail shop sales and our regular visits to guilds and groups around the UK and Ireland to undertake sales of materials and run handspinning workshops.
We started the business as handspinners and later feltmaking came along, we are proud that we are actual workers with fibres and have maintained and developed our skills. We continue to build on our knowledge and experiance by staying in close contact with our suppliers and customers. As the availability of products changes or new trends come along we will always try and respond quickly. If you are looking for something you don't see on our webpages please call we would love to hear from you.
We hope to see you soon, shopping at Wentworth or at one of the group visits which is a real adventure so come along if you can.

Mail Order Sales
We think we have the largest range of fibres for textile workers and we know how to use them. We are always willing to give advice. If you cant find what you want please ask.
We work on the mail order sales Monday to Friday. Saturday is our day off. You can contact us by telephone at the following times but please remember that we are a very busy mail order business so if you cannot get through by phone please use, mail, e mail or fax. We do not make ambiguous statements about delivery times. Normal maximum is 14 days but usually orders are despatched within a few days of the order being received. Or 24 hours if the priority service is requested. Please appreciate that we sometimes have over 50 orders in a day to pack, each one is assembled from loose stock which takes time. We are not a pre-packed warehouse that simply throws things in a box for despatch as the big mail order companies do.
Sometimes when we are short staffed when some of us are working away or even when we feel overworked we turn off the phone for a while to have a break, have a coffee or sit in the garden when the sun shines. Please be patient with us. We are still contactable by e mail and fax
We are not a large organisation with multiple phone answering facilities, automatic ordering systems etc, just a few of us working our way through a pile of orders and customer enquiries. Please be patient when the phone seems constantly engaged it is due to the large number of customers making orders and seeking advice.
It is our policy to deal as personally as possible with customers.
