Merino Roving

Rovings are tops which have been drafted into pencil thin continuous strands prior to twisting. They can be used as they are for knitting, weaving and feltmaking giving a bulky effect, or drawn out and handspun. If you are looking for the range of 125 dyed wool tops for feltmaking please look at the merino wools page.

Tops and Roving. A confusion occurs in the use of these two terms. In the UK a top is wool that has been carded and combed and is usually about thick rope diameter. A Roving is the next stage on where the top has been drawn out to about pencil thickness and is the stage before spinning takes place. There is a tendency in the USA to call tops rovings and cause confusion with the UK description.
