Haunui Fibres
We are proud to introduce Haunui New Zealand fibres, a brand new range to Wingham Wool.
The flock is a fusion of NZ Halfbred and fine Romney sheep which have been line bred for many generations, the aim being to provide wool suitable for hand spinning and felting. This unique line of sheep is known as the Haunui (meaning, place of wind) flock and is quite separate from any other coloured flock and is quite a distinctive wool type.
Great emphasis has been placed on handle, appropriate to its micron, good length, staple formation and good colour, indeed all the qualities that are important for fibre crafts. The wools are washed carded and gilled, to produce a continous sliver. They are not combed. The carded sliver enables the spinner to produce a genuine woollen spun yarn. Care is taken at everystage of the production and this shows in the quality of the product when you begin working with it.
Sheep are not mulesed and are shorn in the spring prior to lambing. This minimises any fibre weakness, lessens the likelihood of ewes getting cast with heavy fleeces and encourages ewes to take their young lambs to shelter in poor weather. Animal welfare is of prime concern with this flock. It is not often that a spinner can know the precise origin of the wool they work with and also for it to have been prepared for them instead of for a commercial production system.
This wool is very similar to Blue Face Leicester, a nice soft handle that gives a finish to the yarn that is finer than the micron count would appear to indicate. Because the wool is only carded and not combed it gives a true woollen spun yarn. Its hard to find ready to spin fibres that have not been combed as they are normally prepared for commercial worsted spinning. This flock is being selected for handspinning qualities and are in that respect quite special.
