| I consider myself fortunate to live here in the village of Paul, just up the hill from Mousehole in the far west of England. This is where I live and work, taking an old tradition and turning it into an art form. I hand spin the yarns that I use for all my projects using fibres from a variety of sources. Some from local wool chosen from the sheep at shearing time and others of a more exotic nature supplied by Ruth and Alan from Wingham Wool Work on their yearly visit to Cornwall, I then hand knit everything that I design .
I love our beautiful rugged landscape and coastline here in Cornwall and this drives my designs, from the simplicity of our ancient stone circles to the more complex nature of our ancient Celtic field systems and the colours of the sea and sky in their many variations. All have, at some time inspired the colours and patterns of my work. From a lump of old metal on the beach and the colours it’s taken on from the sea, to a shaggy cap mushroom that becomes a hat, the ivy and lichen on the trees that seem to form an enchanted forest, and the sight of a dragon fly gliding over a quarry lake.
I show my work at local exhibitions in Lamorna and St. Just, and take my spinning wheel along to various local craft fairs and shows. I always look forward to the Lamorna exhibition that runs for 5 days in the Summer. It is called “A Group of Friends” and that is just what it is. I really enjoy meeting the people from all over the world who buy my designs, and this year we are hoping for two exhibitions. I love the positive feedback and some people can’t seem to decide whether to wear the shawl or hang it on their wall. I have to say that once they have put it on they decide to wear it, and the there always seems to be someone for each hat however quirky.
A lot of the pleasure from what I do comes in the knowledge that I am helping to keep the craft of hand spinning alive, and perhaps encouraging others to try it for themselves. After all, seeing someone else spinning is how I began and I have never looked back. |
