Felting Machine Hire

Here at Wentworth we've amassed quite a few machines over the years. Two of these, a flatbed and roller felter, are now availiable for use. Although very different in design, both of these machines allow wonderful felt pieces to be made with very little effort.
Maximum group size is 4 persons

Price for hire of machines only. It does not include the cost of any fibres used.

Basic instruction in the use of the machines is given. Lessons in feltmaking are not included in the cost. The hire of the machines is only suitable for experienced feltmakers.

Snowy Creek Roller Felting Machine
This machine operates in a similar way to hand rolling of fibres in bubble wrap. Capacity is up to 1 metre wide by 3 metres long. It does depend on the thickness of the work.
Using this machine only requires the wool to be damp with a very mild soap soloution. No need for lots of water splashing around.

Flat Bed

The Felt Maker creates a 36” x 48” felt piece in about 15 to 20 minutes. The firmness and thickness are user variable. If you require a hard finish we have found additional hand rolling to be necessary.

The machine works on the principal of saopy water and pressure. Fibre is laid out on the bottom bed, the top bed is then lowered onto the bottom, clamped together and the motor then drives the bottom plate about 1cm backwards and forwards.

This machine takes a lot of the hard initial work out of feltmaking. To get the most out the machine hire it is best to come with work prepared. Lay out your designs on a net curtain and roll tightly. The whole lot can be unrolled and placed on the machine. After a few minutes felting the net can be removed and the process continued.

Tutor self programmed courses

We invite tutors to bring a small group to Wentworth to make use of our facilities and machinery.
This service is offered in conjunction with our free sampling. There are a few limits set for this aspect of our service.
Participants can sample free of charge from our stock of fibres for either feltmaking or spinning. But if a particular course is set up by the tutor that concentrates on particular fibres a small fee will be charged. Basic equipment for felting and wheels and carders etc for spinning are provided free of charge.
Our felting machinery, roller felter and flat bed felter can be hired to incorporate into any course. Our standard hire rates will apply.
