Sampling Days

For many years we have taken out a van full to bursting with samples of our fibre stock and allowed groups of spinners to sample spin any of the fibres free of charge. We do have to charge travelling expenses which is £90 to anywhere between the south coast and central Scotland. For greater distances we have to make special arrangements. We also need B&B for two persons. This could be for 1 or 2 nights depending on the distance travelled.

For the workshop, a hall is required with table space for around 100 containers and lots of space for at least 25 spinners.  The venue must be available on the previous evening and time allowed at the end of the workshop for packing away which can be around 2 hours. Access to the venue must be available on the previous evening as at least 3 hours of set up time is needed.

Workshops will only be run for groups of 25 or more. Groups often add on a days teaching with Ruth Gough. This is for experienced spinners only and covers some of the more advanced techniques.

Fibre Sampling Workshop

What we do:

We will bring to your group a van full of a vast range of fibres, yarns, books and equipment.

As the foremost supplier of fibres to the textile crafts we are able to offer our extensive range of high quality fibres at very good prices. These will be displayed and most of them will be available for the participants to sample spin. (This does not apply to pre packed and/or pre weighed fibres.) Feltmakers can also experiment if suitable facilities are available.

We will give free advice on the spinning of fibres and demonstrations if time allows. As we have worked with fibres for over 30 years we are able to offer very good advice. Simple wheel maintenance/checking will be undertaken if time allows.

What you must do

  • Provide a venue suitable for at least 25 spinners. (This must be on a ground floor with very close parking and easy access)

  • Access for 3 hours the day/night prior to the workshop is required to unload and display.

  • Assistance in unloading is appreciated if possible.

  • There must also be at least fifteen 8x4 tables.

  • The hall must be booked from 8.00 am to 6pm on the working days

  • We need time to set up and clear away. Assistance in packing up is required.

  • Setting up and packing away time is crucial for the organisation and smooth running of the day.

  • Accommodation for two people for one or two nights, depending on distance travelled is required. Lunch is also required during the day.

  • A charge of £90 will be made towards the cost of travelling for anywhere in Mainland Britain.

Additional Tuition Day

Spinning Tuition

Many groups book an extra day to hold a more formal Spinning Tuition Workshop. This can either be held the day before or after the Sampling Workshop. Content of the course is tailor made to the requirements of the group.

The fee is £100 up to 10 participants and £10 per head for extra students up to a maximum of 15. The Tuition Workshop is normally held in the same venue as the Sampling Workshop so there is the opportunity to see stock and buy goods.
